Last Wednesday, the Jacks were missing two key ingredients to their basketball team - with point guard Braulio Flores and shooting guard Jacob Durfee both on the bench.

With those starters sitting, Cashmere took advantage and defeated Quincy 60-42 in the season opener for both programs. But on Tuesday, Flores returned from a preseason injury and Durfee returned from a one-game suspension carried over from the football season.

The insertion of the two helped carry the Jacks (1-1) past visiting Cascade 64-44.

Those are the only tuneup games for the Jacks before a three-game home stand starting Friday with East Valley, followed by Othello on Saturday and Grandview on Tuesday. The games are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.

It took Quincy three minutes to get on the board against the Kodiaks, but they built a 12-5 lead off of four different scorers. Mario Martinez took a feed from Kody Berens to score at the 4:59 mark and a steal by Berens and a layup gave Quincy a 4-0 lead 13 seconds later.

The Jacks maintained the seven-point cushion throughout the contest, but were more impressive defensively in the first half, allowing just 14 points at the break. Cascade scored 30 in the second half, but Quincy scored 38.

“Defensively we can be a lot more solid,” coach Wade Petersen said.

Offensively, though, Quincy got production from each of the 11 players suited up. Durfee led the Jacks with 11, while Joaquin Vega and Flores each had 10 points and Gera Aragon, Berens and Mario Figueroa each chipped in six points.

“It was nice to see the bench guys (play well),” Petersen said.

Compared to Cashmere game, the Jacks had better ball control, which may be a benefit of having nine seniors and three juniors on the roster.

“We handled the ball better, but we need to make sure we get something out of each possession,” Petersen said. “It helps they know the system. It’s not a big surprise to anybody we play 12 and zone. We are hoping to take advantage of our maturity.”

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-4 lead and kept adding to their lead the rest of the way. Berens led the Jacks with 13 points, while Figueroa added 12 points.
