A generation of children learned that a noun was a person, place or thing, conjunctions hook up phrases or clauses and bills can sit for a long time on Capitol Hill by watching ABC’s School House Rock on Saturday mornings.
Now about 30 local children are learning the same lessons as they rehearse the Quincy Valley Allied Arts production of School House Rock Live! Jr. Performances will be Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Quincy High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $5 at the door.
“Some of the kids know the songs, especially the popular ones like, ‘Conjunction Junction,’ and ‘I’m Just a Bill,’ ” said director Sherri Kooy. “They haven’t been on TV for a while, but they have staying power.”

Those not familiar with School House Rock can view all the videos through the magic of YouTube. The songs about grammar, science, geography and history all are fun and catchy to the point that they are almost insidious — don’t be surprised if you start humming the words to “A Noun is a Person Place or Thing” or “Three is a Magic Number” long after seeing this musical.
Kooy said the cast and crew have had an enjoyable six weeks of rehearsal.
“We’ve had a lot of fun doing it,” she said. “The kids are so much fun.”
Musical director Nancy Connelly said working with the children has been the best part.
“Ten minutes after I get here each night, I’m having a ball,” she said. “The kids are great. And there seems to be a different funny story to remember each night.”
Assistant directors are Erin Morse and Vonna Harris. Lora Allen is the pianist. Pat Connelly and Keith Kooy are the stage hands.
The stars of the musical are the 30 children ranging in ages from 8 to 14 who have worked many hours to bring School House Rock alive on the Quincy stage.
“They really have worked hard,” Sherri Kooy said.
