Area girls heading off to Space Camp

Nine middle school students from Washington were selected to receive the Washington State Migrant Education Program’s scholarship to Space Academy at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Hunstville, Ala. from July 31 to Aug. 5. Two of them are from Quincy.

Eighth-graders Susana Camacho and Mireya Camacho (who are not related) were told earlier this month that they will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Space Academy.

Both said they are very excited about it.

“It’s an all new experience,” Susana said. “I’ve never done anything like it.”

Mireya said she had to write an essay about her experiences in life and her love of science and math for the scholarship.

“I wrote about how much I enjoy math and science and how I would be excited to learn more at the camp,” she said.

Both students are on the honor roll and are very deserving of the award, said their teachers.

“Susana is a very strong student,” said teacher Barbra Holmes. “She is very advanced in her native Spanish — reading books like The Iliad by Homer and Pride and Prejudice in Spanish — and now she’s reading Pride and Prejudice in English, despite only being an English speaker for just a few years.”

Teacher Jill Copenhaver, who teaches both students in math, said they are very deserving of the scholarship.

“I can honestly think of no other students who deserve this award more than Mireya and Susana,” she said. “Besides overcoming obstacles that many of us never face, both girls have risen to the top of their class and really stand out both academically and as individuals who are honest, hardworking, and always giving their best effort.”
