Back to state for the Jackrabbit booters
QHS boys soccer claims third in CWAC tourney
Cody Beaumont picked up 10 saves against Othello on Saturday as the Jackrabbits defeated the CWAC North Champions 3-1 to qualify for state.
On one end of the field, Luis Sorto and Raul Serrano were the reason the Jackrabbits won two games in three days and advanced to the state 2A soccer tournament. They combined for four of the five goals scored. But on the defensive end, Mario Alcarez anchored the defense in his first start of the season.
The 2-0 win over Ellensburg and the 3-1 win over Othello qualified the Jackrabbits (14-6) for the 2A state championships and another date with top-seeded Prosser (15-3).
“This team's got a lot of heart,” coach Tom Turner said. “The guys want to be here and will step up to do whatever it takes.”

Quincy 3, Othello 1
The combo of Sorto and Serrano has dropped in 23 goals and 12 assists this season. The pair each came up with a goal against Othello (14-5).
The first came in the 23rd minute. While Serrano was making a move around a defender, Sorto popped it through the defender's legs. At the same time, Othello keeper Erik Suarez came out of the goal and Serrano made his shot for the 1-nil lead.
“The keeper came out and I lifted it to the corner,” he said.
Othello had an answer 14 minutes later, when Jorge Campos knocked in a header to even the match at 1-1 in the 37th minute. The score remained the same for the next half hour, until Sorto used his speed to set up the next scoring opportunity. Sorto used a burst to get around Othello’s Estevan Miron. Miron was unable to recover, so he grabbed Sorto and threw him to the ground. The Huskie defender was given a red card and his team had to play one-man down the rest of the game. Quincy was awarded a direct kick from about 20 yards out and Juan Carlos Romero drilled it into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.
“I’m glad I got taken down,” said Sorto. “JC’s kicks are perfect.”
The icing on the cake came in the final minutes, when Sorto’s speed once again wreaked havoc on Othello. He got behind the line and went one-on-one with Suarez. His shot fell into the net and Quincy won 3-1.
“His speed around the outside is (incredible),” Serrano said.
The Jacks defense had one major threat all game – league MVP B.G. Guzman. But he was limited to little offense by the Jacks back line.
“They did great,” Quincy keeper Cody Beaumont said. “Guzman is hella-fast and they shut him down this game. He had like one shot.
Mario didn’t even start until this game and he’s done a real good job.”
