A common bond of music

Wenatchee Southern Gospel Group CommonBond 5 performs at the Quincy Nazarene Church.

The Southern Gospel stylings of CommonBond 5, a Wenatchee-based quintet, filled the Nazarene Church in Quincy on Sunday morning. The group, which performs about once a week throughout the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia, consists of five men who are "dedicated to singing the gospel of Jesus Christ." "Our congregation enjoyed the group five years earlier," said Pastor John Hardiman, "and we had the opportunity to invite them back again."

With four CDs to their credit and another set to release late this summer, the group tours to spread their ministry. Songs of Faith, Blessed From Above, On Common Ground, and Sing Glory! are the group's CDs available for purchase now. Singing together since 2001, the group originally planned just one performance for a cancer benefit. Once heard, they were repeatedly asked to continue performing. Concerts and CD sales benefit future tours and performances at local churches and festivals.

Each of the members is a baritone, but with markedly different voice quality. Andy Handley, the high baritone of the group, is an orchardist with crops in Quincy. He is a father of three. Chuck Wiley, who sang in a church quartet as a youngster, also sang in college, and has been married for over 27 years.

Mike Moore says that music has always been a part of his life and is grateful that his family nurtured his love of music and God. He is the father of two grown children and makes his living as a regional sales manager for a group of radio stations in Wenatchee. Alan Williams, the comedian of the group, has five children and enjoys his role as a grandfather when he is not singing.

The lead singer is Stace Knudtson, who grew up surrounded by music. His late father played in a band and he cherishes the fellowship he has with CommonBond 5.

With near record number attendance last Sunday, the Nazarene Church hopes to have the group perform in three year's time, or possibly every other year. "The people really like them," said Pastor Hardiman, "that makes all the difference."

CommonBond 5 has a website that shares concert dates and contact information. They can also be reached at 509-264-1996 and 509-886-2559. The website is www.commonbond5.com.

On July 26, the group will perform for their second cruise on the Lady of the Lake on Lake Chelan. "It's a great time," said Wiley. "It allows us the chance to rub elbows with the people." The sunset dessert and beverage cruise sets sail at 7:45 and docks at 10 p.m. Tickets just came off the press last Saturday and the boat holds 150 guests.
