Community asked to attend a neighborhood school meeting

Meetings are Monday, May 23 at Mountain View Elementary

The Quincy School District Neighborhood School Committee is asking community members to attend a special meeting on Monday, May 23 to give their opinions on the idea of creating elementary schools based primarily on neighborhoods rather than grade levels.

There will be a school district employee meeting at 3:30 p.m. There will be a parent and community meeting in English at 5:30 p.m. and another parent and community meeting in Spanish at 7 p.m. All of the meetings will be in the Mountain View Elementary gymnasium, 117 D St. NW.

The neighborhood school committee was established last fall by the school district. The committee was asked to come up with models for creating neighborhood schools, such as the grade span of the schools, advantages and drawbacks of various models; gather feedback from parents, staff and community members, and make recommendations to the school board regarding the best approach for the Quincy School District. The committee, which is made up of parents, teachers, principals, maintenance staff members, a school board member and district administrators, will give a presentation to the school board in September.

“An important part of this study is the opportunity to share information with parents, staff and community members about the work of the committee and to gather input from them that will help shape the findings and recommendations that the committee hopes to finalize around the start of the next school year,” Superintendent Burton Dickerson stated. “We want to make sure parents, staff and community members not only understand the implications of various grade-span arrangements, including ‘neighborhood schools,’ but also have a chance to share their opinions with the committee.”
