Donald Durand Whitener
Donald Durand Whitener, born Feb. 15, 1924 in Quincy, passed away peacefully Jan. 15, 2010 in Seattle, surrounded by his loving family.
Don attended high school in Quincy. After high school, he joined the Army Air Force from 1944 to 1946. In 1949, he married the love of his life, Elsie C. Lehr. In 1950, he graduated from Central Washington University, a four-year letterman as a baseball pitcher.
Don and Elsie came to Kent, where he started his 37-year career in the Kent School District as a teacher for five years, and 32 years as an elementary school principal, retiring in 1986. In 1954, he earned his Master’s Degree in Administration.

During this time, he was involved as a Cub Scout Cubmaster, Little League coach, and joined the Jr. Chamber of Commerce, was with the Civil Service Commission for seven years, was a charter and 43-year member of Rotary Club, was a member of the Elks Club and was involved in the Kent Reading Council and numerous education programs.
He enjoyed athletics, hunting, fishing, gardening and traveling; he was a loving husband and father.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Elsie; sons, Phil of Auburn and Doug of Everson; daughter, Carol French of Kent; brother, James of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; sisters, Lee Dietsch of Newcastle and Patricia Malloy of Maple Valley and three grandchildren, Kevin French and Chelsea and Weston Whitener.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlyon and Marion, and sister, Jean Packer in 2009.
A funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 29, 2010 at Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Burial will be at Tahoma National Cemetery.
