High Tech High School seniors Ceaser Gonzalez and Colby Rodriguez teamed up for their senior project to collect food for local food banks and coats for children.

The seniors organized the Battle of the Basin Staff Style basketball game, which was held on Feb. 17. Members of the Quincy school district staff pulled out a narrow victory over their Ephrata brethren in a wild affair.

“(The game) was the perfect platform to bring faculty, students and community members from Quincy and Ephrata together to play a game of basketball and help out each community all at the same time,” said High Tech High teacher Owen Sanford, who oversaw the project.

To gain entry to the contest, a person was required to donate two nonperishable food items, a coat for a kid or cash. While Quincy’s margin of victory was small, the cause was anything but. Ceaser and Colby, along with the High Tech High and Quincy High School associated student body members, helped collect 1,000 pounds of food, 42 coats and a pair of boots.

The food was recently distributed to the Quincy and Ephrata food banks. They also helped raise money for their school to visit Central Washington University, where High Tech High students will participate in a ropes course and tour the campus. The concessions stands and game sponsors (LeMaster Daniels and Les Schwab) contributed to the field trip.

“I learned how important organization and details are in planning an event like this,” Gonzalez said during a recent school board meeting presentation.

Rodriguez referred to the many phone calls he made to Quincy and Ephrata district personnel and local businesses when he said, “It really made me focus on my communication skills.”

“Colby and Ceaser were grateful to many people who helped make their senior project a reality, especially the communities of Quincy and Ephrata,” Sanford said. “They are hoping the Battle of the Basin Staff Style game will turn into an annual event, and they look forward to watching next year’s game.”
