Leyden Chavez dribbles down the floor against Wapato last Friday night.

ame against Wapato, the Lady Jacks were probably hoping to just stay within the league average point margin.

The Lady Wolves (7-0) have more than a 20-point win margin in their seven league games this season and Quincy has scored under 20 points twice in league games.

While the Lady Jacks lost the game 48-36, they did enter the half with a 24-16 lead.

The following night, Ellenburg (1-5) used their superior size to build a 22-9 first-quarter lead and win 57-26.

After spotting the Lady Bulldogs a 22-9 first-quarter lead, Quincy tried to rebound by outscoring the visitors 11-6 in the second period. This led to a halftime score of 28-20.

But a scoreless third period led to a 57-26 loss.

Leyden Chavez, Madison Petersen and Marinda Talley scored five points each.

The Lady Jacks looked ready to put an upset on their resume last Friday night - at least after a strong second quarter.

The key was zeroing in on Sammi Jo Blodgett and limiting her looks. The other key was making shots, especially the outside shooting of Petersen (eight points, four rebounds), as well as the inside play of Talley (11 points, 18 rebounds, two blocks) and Aurorah Davis (10 points, nine rebounds, two assists).

"The first half we hit shots," coach Cully Donovan said.

After a first quarter where Blodgett scored the first few points, the Lady Jacks put more of an effort into limiting the star shooter. While she did end up with 15 points, Quincy's ability to keeep an eye on her gave them a chance.

"We tried to limit her," Donovan said. "She scored the first five points, then we did a heck of a job on her."

In the second half, Quincy was limited to 12 points. Unfortunately, their shooting got cold and Wapato was able to put up 32 points.

"It was a good effort; we just need to put four quarters together," Donovan said.
