Globetrotter loves to come home

Yahoo!’s Lisa Karstetter loves to travel, but also is happy to have a home in the Quincy Valley.

If there is one thing Lisa Karstetter loves other than her family, of course, it’s coming home to the Quincy Valley.

“I step off the plane in Wenatchee and I can take a deep breath. No matter where I go, I am always glad to be back in Quincy,” said Karstetter.

She grew up an Othello farm girl and went to New York City to be a nanny for a time right after graduation. “I swore I would never come back,” she said.

She worked as a nanny on Park Avenue for the wealthy Shea family in New York, and would hang out with them at the Piping Rock Club, among celebrities such as Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel. “I would take walks through Central Park. It was really great,” she said. Although she experienced the high-paced life of the city, Karstetter is glad that she and her husband were able to raise there three boys, Mitchell, Austin and Brady right here in Quincy.

“This morning my son went to show animals at the fair, and then he’s going to football practice. After that, he’s going boating. There are so many different opportunities available,” said Karstetter. Her oldest, Mitchell, is attending Montana State in Bozeman, and her other two attend Quincy High School.

Karstetter attended Carroll College in Helena, Mont. for two years and transferred to Whitworth College, where she studied business communications.

When she married Kent Karstetter, she moved to Quincy and started up Creative Travel, which was located at the current Quincy Realty site. After taking some time off to be with her boys, she was asked to fill in temporarily at the Quincy Valley Chamber of Commerce. That temporary job turned into a four-year, full-time job for her until Yahoo! came along.

Karstetter is now working at Yahoo! as a Global Communications Strategist, helping to bridge communications and relations between new Yahoo! companies and their local communities. Her position has also allowed for her to feed her love of travel. She has been to Ireland, Singapore, Prague and Switzerland. Her experience with the Quincy Valley Chamber of Commerce helped her to get a pulse on the communities and learn how Yahoo! could best serve them. She is thankful for the abundant opportunities for outdoor activities that are available locally. “Snow-skiing is one half hour from here, and there is the river, hiking, and the pool. I am blessed to live here,” said Karstetter.

As the wife of an orchardist, she still appreciates life on the farm. She watched this summer with pride as son, Mitchell, raised and sold hay to make extra money. She reminisced about the newness of the crops in the valley, and the rebirth that takes place in the valley every year.

“After harvest, it’s always time to take a breath and enjoy,” she said. Living here, for Karstetter, is good for the soul, and she notes that people care for each other around here.
