Going downhill to reach goals

Tammara Green/Post-Register

Cai Yamamoto

For a young person of just 17 years of age, Cai Yamamoto, son of Calvin and Claudia Yamamoto of Quincy, has set some serious goals. Born in Chewelah, Yamamoto moved here with his family at the age of 4.

His father, Calvin, was hired to work for the local Cenex, and was eventually promoted to a position in Wenatchee, where he now manages ag supply and propane for the company. Cai’s mother, Claudia, spends her time as a ski instructor at Mission Ridge.

From the tender age of 3 years old, Cai learned to love skiing the slopes, as both his parents were ski instructors. His love for other sports followed him throughout his school career as well. Yamamoto has participated in soccer, track, football and wrestling.

As a junior in football at Quincy High School, Yamamoto played corner back on defense, and halfback on offense. When he is not on a team, Yamamoto has been preparing for his senior project, which involves putting on the Rock & Ride event in George, a bike ride which will raise money for the George Community Hall and to purchase bike racks for the new Quincy library.

He has far from forgotten about his love of skiing through the years. In fact, Yamamoto participates competitively in skiing.

For the last two years, he has joined the ranks of the top 15- and 16-year-olds in his sport at Sugarloaf, Maine to compete in downhill racing. Nationally, Yamamoto is ranked eighth in downhill racing, fourth in Super-G, fourth in the giant slalom, and 92nd in slalom. After football season is over, Yamamoto also goes to Vail, Colo. for training, and then to ski at summer camp in Mt. Hood.

“I would like to make the U.S. Ski Team,” he said.

Two others from the Mission Ridge Ski Team made the U.S. team. One competes in the World Cup competition. His other interests include dirt biking and fishing with mom and dad. Yamamoto enjoys the friendships he’s made through skiing.

“I like the small town atmosphere of Quincy, and like knowing most of the people here,” said Yamamoto.

I remember Cai as a young boy making the sport of skiing look so easy. He is blessed with awesome parents in Cal & Claudia. He has the skills and support to reach his goals. Cai, I will watch for you on the US Ski Team.
