Graduates ready to say farewell at ceremonies
The 2010 Quincy High School graduating class is a special one for David Talley, who is finishing his first year as principal of the school, for a variety of reasons.
“Of course I will have to remember the fact that this is the class that my daughter Danielle graduated with during our first year in Quincy,” he said. “As far as the entire class, I will remember how welcoming they were and how I would greet many of them daily in the hallways and how they learned to reply when I said, ‘Good morning.’”
Other memories generated by the 134-member class will stand out for Talley as well.

“I will also remember the twins Marisol and Dayanna Lopez as great competitors in the classroom and on the basketball court,” he said. “I also remember my daughter playing against them in AAU tournaments years ago, once again proving it’s a very small world. I will also remember Mitchell Karstetter asking me if he could climb on the roof to place a banner to ask his date to homecoming and then climbing up with him and several friends to remove it; and asking if he could park several large tractors on the front sidewalk (apparently a tradition).”
Quincy High School’s graduation ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Jaycee Stadium. Tri-valedictorians Jay Cedergreen, Jessica Lerma and Tiffany Yeates are scheduled to speak, as well as senior class president Breck Webley.
The class colors are green and gold, and its motto is “What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are small matters compared to what lies within us.” The class recessional is “I Made It” by Kevin Rudolph.
“I will also remember many students whose stories are ones of personal triumph over odds that most of us will never face in life,” Talley said. “Their graduation, although a milestone in their lives, is only a stepping stone in the big picture, and I hope that they all realize that they can do anything in life when they set their minds to doing it.
“I am honored to have been involved in their lives for this past year and wish them all the success that hard work and perseverance will continue to bring them in the future.”
Twelve seniors will graduate from High Tech High at its ceremony, to be held at 6 p.m. today at Quincy High School’s Performing Arts Center. The commencement address will be given by Ken Daniel, with student speeches to be delivered by Veronica Estrada and Sierra Fear.
The class motto is “Life brings tears, smiles and memories. The tears dry, the smiles fade, but the memories last forever.” The class recessional is also “I Made It” by Kevin Rudolph.
“It’s small and personal and usually nice,” principal Garry Stidman said of the ceremony. “It’s very traditional. I always talk the the students at the end, and the kids ask me in advance what I’m going to say. I always tell them, ‘Well, you better show up to find out.’ ”
