Grandpa gets around town

Tammara Green/Post-Register

Cecillo Garza has lived in Quincy since 1965. He has enjoyed raising his family here.

Cecilio Garza came from Alamo, Texas with his young family to Quincy in 1965. His first job was picking rocks, and he continued to work hard to support his growing family of eight girls and one boy: Angie, Sylvia, Diana, Nancy, Linda, Gracie, Lupe, Marie and Arnold. Garza saw that there was a lot of work available in the Quincy Valley. He worked on local farms for 14 years, and worked for Lamb-Weston for the next 14 years.

Even at the age of 80, Garza can be seen outdoors doing yard work and mowing the lawn. He takes care of disabled friends and family. He also drives some of his younger friends and family to doctor’s appointments. “I look around and see what needs to be done and I do it. If there is garbage, I pick it up,” said Garza. He also collects cans and recycles them for extra change.

When he visits the grave of his son, Arnold, at the Quincy Cemetery, he often takes the time to maintain other plots. “He visits every day,” said daughter Diana Hernandez.

Garza is very involved in taking care of his community and is concerned that a lot of the alleys around town need to be cleaned up. He stops to talk to everyone, and always waves when people pass by. Some have even taken to calling him “grandpa.” His wife of 58 years, Rita, quipped, “Even the dogs know him.”

Garza enjoys being active in his church and doing for others. He enjoys family barbecues and celebrations. Soon, Garza and his wife will be reunited with their original home on 3rd Avenue, where they will have more room for guests. Garza’s hope for 2012 is for peace and there is rain for the farmers.

Cecilio was a very good friend to my late father and my "Pop" spoke very highly of him. I enjoyed the times that he came by my home to visit, and he was the only one of my father's friends who did not forget him when he passed. Thank you Cecilio, you're a good man!!!
