Quincy Valley Allied Arts' production of "The Great Ice Cream Scheme," by Billy St. John, has everything that a good melodrama should have.

There's the intrepid young hero, the pretty damsel in distress, the deliciously wicked villain, the goofy supporting characters and plenty of twists, turns, chuckles and groaners. Plus, there is one added bonus — ice cream.

"We had such a good response to our dinner theater from two years ago, that we decided to do something like that this year," said director Sherri Kooy. "So when we were looking for melodramas, we found this one. It's a lot of fun and it's also about ice cream, which everyone likes."

The play will run Friday and Saturday at the Quincy Senior Center, 522 F St. SE. The show is at 7 p.m. both nights. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Dragonfly, 401 F St. SW or at the door. Tickets also include an ice cream sundae at intermission.

The melodrama mostly takes place in an ice cream parlor in the early 1900s. The audience is part of the production as the parlor's patrons.

Cast members include: Nancy Connelly as Etta Lotta Spumoni, Patric Connelly as Alec DeSpoon, Vonna Harris as Candy Sprinkles, Keith Kooy as Walt Nutz, Paul Slager as Pop Sicle, Ginny Johnson as Nana Peel, Alex Buchmann as I.C. Custard, Michael Plagerman as Robin Baskins, Shannon Slager as Marsha Mallow and Erin Morse as Parfait DeLuxe. Mandy Ottley, Megan Slager and Bethany Leonard round out the cast as extras.

Marcia Streich plays the piano, Dean Pearl built the sets, and props and costumes were created by Sherri Kooy.

"It's a lot of fun," she said. "We're having a good time rehearsing it and we hope the audience enjoys it as much as we have."
