Junior Jacob Durfee led the Jacks with 15 points on Tuesday against Othello.

It appeared the Jacks were ready to call it quits after the first 16 minutes of Tuesday CWAC basketball game in Othello.

Quincy scored just two first quarter points and some how entered the break with only 13 points on the scoreboard. But to their delight, they trailed the Huskies by a mere five points.

Then a whole new team came out in the second half and picked up a 47-37 win.

“We just started slow,” point guard Braulio Flores said. “(Coach Wade Petersen) said just play like its the last game of the season - don’t give up.”

The second half surge also kept them in the hunt for a playoff berth with six games remaining. Quincy sits at 3-9, while the sixth place teams - Ephrata and Selah - stand at 5-7.

After a lackluster first half, the Jacks used the Petersen model for success to get back on track. They needed to do something drastic, as they were in a 10-game losing streak and dangerously close to ending their post-season dreams two weeks early.

“We struggled to execute and we really were unorganized with what we were doing,” Petersen said.

For Jacob Durfee (15 points, seven rebounds) the idea was simple - get to the post-season. He buried a trio of three-pointers in the second half to kick start the offense.

“I don’t want it to end,” he said.

Quincy scored 16 points in the third quarter and limited the Huskies (3-9) to four points and grabbed a 29-22 lead. A big boost came from a 10-0 run to end the quarter. Durfee hit a pair of shots, while Flores (eight points, six rebounds) took a steal in for layup and Erick Aguirre had a steal turn into a Gera Aragon bucket and one.

“We told the kids over and over good defense breeds good offense,” Petersen said. “We had good energy in the third quarter.”

In the fourth quarter, the Jacks held onto their lead. Joaquin Vega was able to make 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Mario Martinez added 11 points and six rebounds.

“Some of the kids have really grown up and learned,” Petersen said. “The most important thing is being resilient.”

Grandview 43, Quincy 36

The Jacks kept pace with the second best team in the league for three quarters, but found themselves in a 21-14 hole at the half. The Greyhounds (10-2) used a 11-5 second quarter to defeat Quincy 43-36. Durfee scored 10 points for the Jacks.
