John Lindquist took all of 37 seconds to record a pin over Prosser's Payton Sperl.

It may have been senior night last Thursday, but a pair of freshmen did their part in Quincy’s 54-24 win over visiting Prosser.

126-pound John Lindquist and 170-pound Steven Gomez were able to out-duel their underclassmen opponents, which set up the Jacks’ trio of seniors in the lineup for a blistering finish.

Leading 38-24 and the Mustangs still clinging to a chance at the team win, 126-pound Uriel Heras went to work on Derek Dimas. He opened the match with a takedown and after Dimas recorded an escape, the senior added a takedown and a three-point nearfall for a 7-1 lead. Heras added three more points in the second and capped the match with a five-point takedown, nearfall combination for the 15-1 victory.

Next up was senior Blas Magana, whose only job was to accept a forfeit. But the win gave Quincy a 48-24 lead with one match remaining - 138-pound Gerardo “Gerry” Benitez.

After a couple of shot attempts, the senior saw an opening with a double leg takedown. The two-point lead quickly turned into a 72-second pin and 54-24 Jackrabbit victory.

“That guarantees us a winning season in league,” coach Greg Martinez said. “It’s always hard on a night when your routine is interrupted. It was senior night, but we did well.”

Lindquist recorded the quickest pin on the night - just a hair over 30 seconds on the scoreboard. He came out against Prosser’s Dylan Sperl and quickly got ahold of a wrist and got him on his back several times before earning the pin just 37 seconds into the match.

“He was like kicking and I was trying to hold him down,” Lindquist said. “I had his wrist and got an arm bar in there and tilted him. It was just an easy move.”

Gomez needed the full three rounds to defeat Prosser’s Lane Culver 18-15. But in the first few seconds, it looked as though Culver was going to walk away with an easy win. The Mustang wrestler took Gomez down easily for a 2-0 lead. Gomeze regrouped to take a 7-3 lead by the end of the first period.

“He’s improving a lot,” Martinez said. “He’s had some bumps and bruises, but he's been wrestling Antonio (Melendez) and (Carter (Bushman) in practice and it is starting to show.

“He did not get down after the other guy came out and took him down quick and came back with a reversal.”

Gomez built on his lead after the two wrestlers combined for 12 points in the second period. After a takedown, nearfall and reversal, Gomez had a 14-8 lead. The final three minutes was also action packed with 11 more points scored. Gomez added one more takedown and reversal to seal the three-point win.
