The Jacks celebrate after upsetting the Toppenish Wildcats 61-49 on Friday, Jan. 27.

Last Friday night was a huge upset and boost for the Jacks postseason push.

The Toppenish Wildcats entered the CWAC game with 11 wins versus one loss, but left with two losses. Quincy (4-10) used a solid defensive effort and huge night by junior Jacob Durfee for the 61-49 win.

The following night, the Jacks were tripped up by third-place Wapato (10-4) 69-46. The weekend split leaves them in eighth place, just behind Selah (4-10) and Ephrata (5-9). Both teams beat Quincy earlier this season.

It was safe to say Durfee (30 points, 13 rebounds) was a game changer on offense and got better throughout the evening. He scored five points in the opening quarter, added six in the second, eight more in the third quarter and finally poured in 11 points in the fourth quarter.

He even beat the clock once. With under a minute left in the game and Quincy looking to pull ahead, Durfee put up a desperation shot as the shot clock expired. The 3-pointer fell and the Jacks took a 56-48 lead.

“I looked up and saw two seconds on the clock and said ‘I got to throw this up,’” he said. “We just wanted to go out and get a win.”

And a win they got. But you would never have thought they were the underdogs. The first time these two teams met, the Wildcats were sinking 3-pointers and scoring in bunches. So the game plan was to clamp down on defense and especially Kyle Jamison and Randy Isodore. The two combined for 43 points in December. Last Friday night they combined for 17 points.

“Jamison lit us up the last time, he had 22 points and tonight he had six,” coach Wade Petersen said. “Tonight our defense was just more solid and fundamentally sound. We did not allow the wide open threes like the first time.”

While the final score shows a 12-point victory, Toppenish was able to cut the lead down to one point in the fourth quarter - 48-47 with 2:39 on the clock. Mario Figueroa scored 11 seconds later and a putback by Durfee gave the Jacks a 52-47 lead at the two-minute mark. Quincy closed out the game on a 9-1 run.

“That was the first time all year we played up to our potential,” Petersen said. “But it was not our best."

Mario Martinez added 12 rebounds and seven points, Braulio Flores added 10 points and Gerardo Aragon had four rebounds.

“That’s a great win for us.”

Wapato 69, Quincy 46

Quincy was unable to carry their momentum into Saturday’s game in Wapato. They fell behind by nine points in the first half, but made a surge in the third quarter to pull within 31-26 with just over three minutes to play.

Then it was the Wolves turn as they closed out the quarter on a 10-2 run for a 41-28 lead. Durfee scored 17 points, while Flores had nine and Figueroa and Erick Aguirre each added seven points.
