Jacks win seesaw battle against Tigers
Carter Bushman pinned Ephrata Bryce Unruh in the second round last Thursday night.
Carter Bushman knew one thing coming into last Thursday’s wrestling dual in Ephrata - he needed to strike quickly.
He sat out the first month of the season with a foot injury and figured he would need to come up with a fast win against Ephrata’s Bryce Unruh. The two sophomores exchanged five-point moves in the first period to knot the match at 5-all going into the second period. Then Bushman opened the second with an escape and eventually a pin.
It was one of five pins on the night by the Jacks. Quincy won the match 39-27, thanks in part to Bushman’s first match of the season.

In the first round, Unruh threw Bushman to the mat with a head and arm for a takedown and three mat points, but a reversal and his own three-point nearfall evened the score. It was then he knew something had to be done quickly.
“In the second round I was tired and he tried another head and arm,” Bushman said. I knew I had to get him in the first or second round.”
But it was Bushman who landed the throw and a few moments later was able to record the pin at the three, 33 second mark.
“I heard him say he can’t and it made it easy for me,” he said.
The win gave Quincy an 18-3 lead five bouts into the duel, but the host Tigers won five of the next six to take a 27-21 lead. That left the Jacks with their top-2 wrestlers in the final three matches to make up the difference. Gabe Martinez pinned Miguel Rodriguez and Christian Alejandrez pinned Carlos Flores, both in the first round and Quincy took a 33-27 lead.
The final match pitted freshman John Lindquist against junior Eli Perez. After a scoreless first round, the first points of the bout came from a reversal by Perez. Then Lindquist scored an escape, followed by double leg takedown and eventually a cradle for a pin at the 3:49 mark.
Quincy won 39-27.

Cheney Invite
106-pounder Gabe Martinez keeps on trucking. The junior earned a first-round bye at the Cheney Invitational and then recorded back-to-back pins against KC Ayers of Deer Park and Mikey Bonifer of Aberdeen, before winning the title bout 5-3 over Lakeside’s Austin Hoobler.
The Jacks placed fifth in the tournaments, but only brought nine wrestlers in eight weight brackets. A pair of second-place finishes came from 126-pound Heras and 170-pound Melendez, while 145-pound Jiminez and 170-pound Gomez each placed fifth.
