Jacks win two of three
Mario Martinez draws a foul against East Valley's Chris Karnes.
The good news for the Quincy boys basketball team - the Jacks opened the CWAC season with two wins over the weekend. The bad news - they lost to visiting Grandview on Tuesday and now sit at 2-1 in league.

You could say the Greyhounds (3-0) scored at will in the first and last quarters on Tuesday. The visitors took a 24-5 lead in the first quarter from their uptempo game and the shooting of Kiki Mendoza (23 points).
In the middle two quarters, Quincy slowed down the pace and chipped away at the Grandview lead. They pulled within seven points at 31-24 midway through the third quarter off back-to-back buckets by Mario Martinez (eight points).
But that was as close as they got, as the Greyhounds went on an 11-0 run to end the third and open the fourth quarters.
Braulio Flores and Mario Figueroa (six rebounds, two assists) led the Jacks with nine points apiece, while Jacob Durfee had seven rebounds and Jesus Pedregon had five rebounds.

After giving up 33 points in the first half, the Jacks got defensive and limited the Huskies (2-1) to 10 second-half points.
It was the Jacks' best Tim Tebow impression. They were out-played most of the game and did not even see hide nor hair of a lead until the final minutes of the game. But their defense kept the Jacks within reach and Figueroa (12 points, four rebounds) hit a few keys shots down the stretch for the win.
“They pretty much dominated us,” coach Wade Petersen said. “We passed them up in the last minute and a half.
“That’s what gave us an opportunity to win. Keep the scoring low and hitting the shots at the end.”
Durfee added seven rebounds and four assists.

The Jacks had an offensive explosion last Friday night against the visiting Red Devils, with Durfee (five rebounds) and Figueroa (five rebounds) each dropping in 16 points.
The game did not start out like the Jacks were going to light up the scoreboard, as they held a slim 9-8 lead after the first quarter. Then they scored 22 points in the second quarter and added 25 points in the third quarter.
Flores (10 assists) added 10 points and Martinez (10 rebounds) added six points.
“We shot the ball pretty well tonight,” Petersen said. “Good defense will give you good offense. We keep telling them that.”
