Jamming open for all in George
Music lovers are invited to attend First Friday Bluegrass Jams
If you are a closet musician, or even one who performs publicly, there is no better place for you than George’s “First Friday Bluegrass Jam.” The “Jam” is a two-hour session of bluegrass jamming on instruments from the violin to the dobro.
“Some of our friends asked if we could get together and play, and we called it the “First Friday Jam.” It was that simple,” said organizer and jam co-leader Debby Kooy.
There are seasoned musicians and beginners among the ranks of the 12-14 players who show up faithfully to play their instruments every month. Kooy, who is learning guitar, finds that she comes away with a better understanding of how to play each time. “It’s OK to make mistakes,” she said.

Kooy emphasizes that anyone with an instrument can play and anyone with ears can come and listen. She and her husband, Elliot, search out new songs each month and learn them. Then they present them to the group at the jam session.
“Everyone plays along with it. It’s just fine,” said Kooy.
Jam sessions happen the first Friday of each month at the George Community Hall from 7 to 9 p.m., including this Friday, Feb. 3. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. Anyone who just wants to listen to music or join in and play is welcome, said Kooy. It is a fellowship in music, and there are many other beginners who will help you feel at home.
