Key wins push Jacks past Top-Hi
Cade Wallace earned a 9-0 major decision on Jan. 12 against Josue Jiminez of Toppenish.
Antonio Melendez, for the second time this season, was bumped up one weight class and for the second time this season, got the job done for the QHS wrestling team.
This time when Toppenish came to town, the 167-pound sophomore faced Artemio Gomez, a true 182-pounder. The weight differential never played a factor in Melendez’s eyes. After building a 9-0 lead, he pinned Gomez at the three-minute, 32-second mark of the second period.
This also ensured Quincy a 45-30 win and jumped their league record to 4-2.

Melendez credits coach Mike Wallace for prepping him for his match with Gomez.
“That all comes with coach Wallace’s conditioning,” he said. “If you do it right, weight doesn’t matter.”
The match started out with a pair of major decisions by Gabe Martinez (106) and Christian Alejandrez (113). Each wrestler faced their their own set of obstacles. For Martinez, he faced a shorter, but stockier opponent, while Alejandrez faced a taller Wildcat wrestler.
Martinez defeated Danny Juarez 16-7, while Alejandrez won 12-4 over Sergio Morales. The 113-pounder opened with a lift and throw for two points.
“I was just trying to get under him,” Alejandrez said.
The final five points came from countering a throw by Morales. Alejandrez was holding a 7-4 lead toward the end of the third period and Morales started maneuvering for a throw, but Alejandrez was ready and countered with his own throw, five points and a 12-4 major decision.
“I knew he was ranked third and I knew it was going to be very hard. I had to stay low and wrestle smart,” he said. “Freestyle - that’s when it comes in handy.”
160-pound freshman Cade Wallace picked up his second CWAC win of the season, but he had to figure out how to get past fellow freshman Jose Jiminez. The Wildcat kept locking his legs onto one of Wallace’s legs. This kept him from turning Jiminez more than once for mat points.
The one time he did get mat points was from a barbwire as time expired in the first period. Wallace ended up with a 9-0 major decision after three takedowns - one per period.
“It was a good match. I just kept trying to kick out of his legs,” Wallace said. “It worked out for me.”
