Ladies pin down third at invite

Alexa Diaz and Cynthia Ramirez may be new to the wide world of wrestling, but you would never know that watching them on the mat.

In fact, one would be hard pressed not to be a little impressed with the entire QHS girls wrestling team, after they took third place at the Warden Womens Invitational last Saturday. Diaz placed second in the 124-pound weight bracket and Ramirez was third in the 106-pound bracket. As a team, the Lady Jacks placed seven on the podium and scored 71 points to edge out Brewster (67) for third place. The winner was Warden with 219 points, while Othello was second with 161 points.

Just a few short weeks ago, the Lady Jacks were blanked by Warden in a dual and instead of throwing up their hands and walking away, they went right back to work.

“These girls have a fighting attitude,” said coach Nikki Noble.

Longtime boys assistant coach Arnold Ybarra was in agreement.

“They’re not afraid and want to fight back. They are getting a little success and want more,” he said. “They’ve improved big time.”

Ramirez (6-3) was living proof with her three wins and one loss at the tournament. She opened the day with a pin against Sunnyside’s Alondra Quezadas, before falling to eventual champion Deianerira Caudle of Warden. She bounced back to pin Othello’s Lorena Zurita, as well as Othello’s Toria Zambrano to place third. The final match was a little redemption from a loss at the Bob Mars Invite two weeks ago. Zambrano had the upper hand early in the match, but Ramirez battled back with a reversal and a third-period pin for the win.

“I’ve been practicing harder and conditioning has gotten harder,” she said. “I felt like I was more conditioned and I could last longer.”

Diaz won her first two matches by pin. The first was a 52-second fall against Julissa Valenciano of Othello and the second was a first-period fall against Tawnie Gonzales of Warden. In the finals she was pinned by Royal's Mariana Alvarez.
