Making a happy home in Quincy

Yolanda Solano works at Vordahl’s Department Store.

During the course of her young life, Yolanda Solano has been many places. She was born in Paul’s Valley, Okla., and moved to Chicago with her father at the age of 5. As the only girl, she admits to being spoiled, as she was a “daddy’s girl.” She attended St. Charles East High School an hour and a half outside of Chicago up to her senior year.

During her last year in school, she began corresponding with and talking to Edgar Solano, who had also lived in Illinois at one point. Within two months, they decided to get married.

In 2007, Solano made the trip to Quincy and eventually made a happy home here for herself, her husband, son and daughter. “My son is 4 1/2 going on 5 pretty soon, and my daughter is 3 1/2,” Solano said.

Currently, Solano works at Vordahl’s Department Store, where she has been for the past 10 months. She has also worked at the Quincy Market and Ace Hardware. Her favorite hobby is her kids and husband. She is famous at home for her chicken tamales with green chili sauce.

Solano loves living in Quincy. “It’s a good place to raise your kids. It’s not like a big city where you have cars all over the place and there is a lot of traffic,” she said.
