New summer swim season under way for Quincy youth
Russell Silk won the 50-meter butterfly in a time of 34.42 seconds during last week's dual meet in Cashmere. The 13-year-old also won the 50-free and 50-backstroke to take high point honors.
Tyson Beaumont, Gates Petersen, Russell Silk and Rachel Horning kicked off their summer swim team schedule rolling triple sevens and scoring 21 points each. Despite their efforts, Quincylost to host Cashmere 4.75 to 4.31.
The loss did not deter coach Jay Knodell from handing kudos to his young team. He had 46 swimmers for the first outing of the season
"I was pleased," he said. "I didn't know what to expect. We lost a lot of people this season."

"To be honest I was most impressed with the little kids."
But he also added 15 new recruits and still has a handful of standouts from last year. Eight-year-old Beaumont was tops in both the 25 and 50 freestyle swims and added a first in the back, while 10-year-old Gates Petersen was the fastest in the 50 and 100 free, as well as the 50 breaststroke.
For the girls, 14-year-old Rachel Horning continued to be impressive, winning the 100 free, 50 fly and 50 backstroke.
"It's almost like she is forgotten, because she gets first place every time by a half a pool," Knodell said. "She is just consistent."
Silk also returns after a successul '09 season. He lost just one individual race all last year, due to a disqualification with his kick in the breastroke. This year he dropped the 100-meter indivual medley and added the backstroke. He won the back, as well as the 50 fly and 50 free.
"I won all my swims last season except for the IM at championships, earning me the season high-point trophy. I was switched out of the IM to the backstroke because of the DQ last year at the championships," Silk said. "I might get back into the breaststroke further into the season. I need to work on my kick and show my coaches that I kick correctly."
Last week, the team had their fair share of disqualifications, 13 to be exact, which is to be expected in the first meet of the summer. But Knodell is confident that number will be drastically reduced this week.
"We had a lof of DQ's, but it was simple stuff we can fix," he said. "Like kids did not want to hit their heads and there were one-handed touches on the butterfly and breasttroke."
