New vice principal hired for QHS

Mike Carlson, the new vice principal for Quincy High School, was introduced to the Quincy School Board during its meeting on Tuesday, July 19.

He will replace Chris McKnight, who left Quincy School District to become the principal of Warden High School. Carlson, who grew up in Naches, comes to Quincy from Richland School District, where he was the dean of students for River’s Edge High School.

He said he was interested in Quincy because “the people are top-notch and their philosophy of education is individualized. They care about the kids individually.”

Carlson, who has a 15-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son, plans to move to Quincy. He is engaged to Stephanie Gilbert, who grew up in Royal City. They plan to marry in September.

As vice principal, Carlson will be responsible for student discipline.

“I hold myself and my students to high expectations,” he said.

In other business, the school board approved its budget for the 2011-2012 school year.

The general fund budget of $27.335 million is less than a 1 percent increase over the previous budget, explained superintendent Burton Dickerson. The growth includes expenditures from the PEP Grant and also growth in staffing because of enrollment increases. The district will add three and two-thirds full-time certified staff members to handle a growing enrollment and will also hire an additional two and a half classified staff members. The district can increase staff, rather than cut staff, which is what a number of other districts in the state are doing, because of the levy that the voters passed last year, Dickerson added.

The school board was given the results of the district’s grade-span committee study. The committee recommends that the district consider making Mountain View and Pioneer Elementary schools both K-3, along with George, in the near future and then eventually working toward developing schools that are K-5 and a middle school that is grades 6 to 8. The idea of the neighborhood school concept is to limit the number of transitions students have to make and also make it easier for parents to be involved in the schools, Dickerson said.

In a report given by facilities manager Tom Harris, the board was told of several improvements to the high school facilities, including the installation of two more portable buildings, paving of the north parking lot and the loop around the east end of the gymnasium, resurfacing of the athletic track and resurfacing of the gymnasium floor.
