Adventists donate blankets

Members of the Quincy Seventh-day Adventist Church donated money to purchase 51 blankets and donated them to the Quincy Food Bank. The blanket donation is an annual project for the church.

Salaries increase for City Council

The Quincy Salary Commission approved a pay raise for Quincy’s mayor and city councilmembers. The raises will take effect in January. The commission approved a 20 percent raise for the mayor and a 12.5 percent increase for the council. The mayor will now receive $1,200 a month and the council $450 a month. Councilmembers must attend 50 percent of their meetings to earn the salary.

Financial Peace University

Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University is coming to Quincy. The classes will begin Sunday, Jan. 8, at 6 p.m. the Faith Community Church, 1005 10th Ave. SW.

Nearly one and a half million families have been able to positively change their financial situation through Financial Peace University (FPU), the 13-week course taught by Dave Ramsey on DVD. FPU teaches families and individuals common-sense principles like how to make a plan with their money so they are able to free themselves of debt and build lasting wealth. Big Bend academic awards

Big Bend Community College announced its academic awards for the fall 2011 quarter. Quincy students on the President’s List with a GPA of at least 3.75 included: Hanah Allen, Maria Aragon, James Bensch, Jessica Esparza, Jennifer Gardner, Samuel Gregg, Jessica Low, Christopher Oswood, Timothy Timbrook, Jay VanHoof and Mariya Volkova. Those on the Vice President’s List with a GPA of 3.33 to 3.74 included: Hilda Alvarado, Gustavo Alvarez, Amanda Argueta, Sarita Bustos, Marisol Lopez, Marivel Lopez-Corona, Joanie Magallanes, Ayla Medina, Esaul Quintero, Enedina Ramos, Ruben Reyes, Telisha Saldana, Lindsey Thayer, Joel Villela and Dessie Wyles.

Post-Register New Year’s schedule

The Quincy Valley Post-Register’s office will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2 for the New Year’s holiday. The deadline for the Quincy/Central Basin Shopper is Friday, Dec. 30 at 10 a.m.

Cooking class begins in January

The second five-week series of Master Cooking Classes with chef Mehdi Merred will begin Tuesday, Jan. 10 and run through Tuesday, Feb. 7. Cost for the class is $125 and class size is limited to eight people. Call The Grainery at 797-7240 to register.

The first Master Cooking Class raised $500 for the Quincy Valley Medical Center Foundation Scholarship Fund.

Senior Center closed this week

There will be no meal at the Quincy Senior Center on Thursday, Dec. 29 because of the ongoing remodel project at the facility.
