Motorcyclist escapes after chase

A motorcyclist escaped after leading a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy on a high-speed chase on eastbound Highway 28 toward Quincy Saturday night.

The deputy spotted an eastbound rider traveling 71 mph in a 60 mph zone about four miles east of East Wenatchee at 10:23 p.m. The rider was on a dark-colored motorcycle of unknown make and wearing a black helmet. When the deputy turned around and attempted to stop the rider, the rider sped up, passing other vehicles on the right at speeds up to 130 mph.

The deputy called for assistance and made the decision to discontinue the pursuit about 14 miles east of East Wenatchee.

If caught, the motorcyclist will be arrested for felony eluding, he said. Anyone with information about the incident should call the sheriff’s office at 884-0941.

Grant cell phone tickets valid

Some of the drivers ticketed for talking on a cell phone in the first weeks after a new law took effect June 10 may be off the hook.

Some cities reference the Department of Licensing’s rule book in writing tickets, but the department’s Model Traffic Ordinance was not updated with the current law in time.

Cities that use the Model Traffic Ordinance didn’t have authority to enforce it until the department updated the rule book on July 1. The problem does not apply to tickets written by the Washington State Patrol or cities such as Seattle and Tacoma that use their own traffic rule books.

“The Grant County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that this issue only applies to tickets written under municipal and county codes that incorporate the Model Traffic Ordinance code,” Grant County prosecutor Angus Lee said in a statement. As we understand it, all cell phone violations in Grant County are written under RCW 46.61.667. Therefore, Grant County infractions are valid and there is no authority requiring Grant County to issue refunds or cancel tickets.”
