Portraits to ponder over

Coulee City artist Allon Boub's works are on display the Mary Kazda Art Space in the Quincy Public Library.

The Mary Kazda Art Space at the Quincy Public Library is once again decorated with paintings. This month and next, the library will display original paintings by Coulee City resident, Allon Buob. The lifelong artist began painting landscapes and seascapes in oil 15 years ago and added portraits to his repertoire about two years ago.

"I have always enjoyed drawing as far back as grade school in Coulee City," said Buob. "I also took art classes at Ephrata High School.†Throughout my working life, while living in California and then Massachusetts, I have always taken some type of art classes using various forms and media," he added.

Buob's life-like portraits in oils decorate three of the walls at the local library.

"I enjoy that particular style of painting.†When friends saw one of the portraits I painted, they also wanted portraits done.†So, that is what got me started with portraiture.†I mainly paint them in oil," Buob said.

One of the many instructors that Buob studies under is Thelma Thon-Sevey. Over the years he has learned about painting landscapes, seascapes and now portraits in her classes.†"The very first show I entered was at the Art Guild of Soap Lake and I received honorable mention for two of the paintings entered," he said.†"Last year, I entered some paintings in the Douglas County Fair and received best in class as a professional painter.† I am currently not only seeking interested parties who will commission me to paint their portraits, but am also seeking places of business where I may temporarily display my paintings."

Buob's paintings at the library are currently not for sale but he hopes to connect with interested parties who would like to commission him to paint. "My average fee for a portrait can range from $200 to $500, depending on size, subject(s) and other factors," said Buob.†He paints most of the portraits from photographs.
