Eighth-grade Math is Cool team wins first place in division at Spokane competition
QJHS math takes first place.
Thirty-seven students from the Quincy Junior High competed in the Math is Cool Masters competition in Spokane on Friday.
The eighth-grade team placed first in their division, while the seventh-grade team placed 19th. Eighth-grader Gunnar Petersen placed fifth overall in the individual Algebra I competition. Lauren Goninan was the top placing seventh-grader for the school in Pre-Algebra.
The Math is Cool competition, which included 102 different teams from 33 schools in Eastern Washington, consists of timed and mental math tests, team and individual competitions and a college bowl, where students go head-to-head against other schools in an oral competition. Overall team scores are derived from a combination of the different events.

“We’ve always placed just out of the top four,” said Jill Copenhaver, eighth-grade teacher at QJHS. “This year was really nice. I’m surprised I didn’t float off the gym floor.”
The top four scorers from the eighth grade, Gunnar Petersen, Hamilton Hyer, Elizabeth Nielson and Nicholas Lopez, will go on to the state competition in Moses Lake in the beginning of December.
“The kids are so excited,” said Copenhaver. “They worked really hard. The students came in twice a week during lunch and gave up their social time. They are really dedicated. I’m really proud of them.”

I remember three years ago. We were the first Junior High team to go to Math is Cool. We placed 6th and barely got to go to state. I am so proud to see that so many more people have gotten into the program.
