Quincy’s Mathcounts team members are (L to R): teacher, Jill Copenhaver, Hamilton Hyer, Eric Navarro, Gunnar Petersen, and Alfredo Aguilar.

“I’m ready,” said seventh-grader Gunnar Petersen,” when he was asked about the Mathcounts competition, slated to take place on Saturday, March 12 at the Microsoft Park in Redmond. Peterson admitted he was mostly excited about staying at the hotel and swimming in the pool. Petersen took home first place overall in the regional contest, and is looking to go even further. On this trip, he will be joined by math-mates Hamilton Hyer, Eric Navarro and Alfredo Aguilar, who helped bring home a third-place group win this year for Quincy Junior High. Navarro is excited to compete. Their teacher, Jill Copenhaver, is proud of their progress. “Gunnar, for example, won the regional competition going up against other sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders. That is very rare,” said Copenhaver. As much as many people would like to cheer the boys on next weekend, Copenhaver mentioned that due to security issues, Microsoft only allows students and their coaches to attend the all-day event. This will be the second year that students from Quincy Junior High have made it to the regional and state levels of Mathcounts. The Quincy groups who attend are from Copenhaver’s math competition class at the junior high school. They are largely supported by the Wenatchee chapter of Professional Engineers. “They do a nice job of supporting kids and exposing them to careers in engineering. They help pay for our travel and other expenses during competition,” said Copenhaver.
