Quincy fourth at Rock Tournament

Gerry Benitez found out first hand what the term “gut check” means.

The senior 138-pounder lost in the first round of the Vashon Island Rock Wrestling Tournament, which meant the best he could finish was fifth place. It was not ideal, but Benitez found a way to reel off three straight wins, grab fifth place and help the Jacks place fourth overall.

“I think the kids wrestled great to get fourth,” head coach Greg Martinez said. “There was a lot of technically sound wrestling, taking shots when they needed to and their sprawls are getting better.”

“If you get a bad draw or a real tough kid in the first or second round, it shoots you in the foot. (Benitez) had a fairly successful day and wound up fifth.”

Quincy also had nine other top-6 individual finishes. Christian Alejandrez (113), John Lindquist (120) and Isias Jiminez (145) each grabbed second place, while Gabe Martinez (106) and Uriel Heras (126) each placed third. Benitez placed fifth, Blas Magana (132), Andy Vargas (152), Antonio Melendez (170) and Steven Gomez (182) each placed sixth.

“I was hoping to get six in the semifinals and we got five,” Martinez said.

The tournament panned out almost the way Martinez drew it up. He was happy to see Jiminez put a new move into action. The week prior to the tournament, Quincy Junior High School principal Scott Ramsey came in to teach the team the arm bar. The lesson sank in with Jiminez.

“Isias put together his best tournament of the year,” Martinez said. “ Mr Ramsey came in and taught the arm bar and Isias beats his first two guys using it.”

The first was a pin over Blaine’s Eddie Fontes and the second was a 6-2 decision against Dustin Veysey of La Center. He advanced to beat Vashon’s Kevin St. Thomas 10-8 in the semifinals, but lost in the finals to Mike Moniz of Orting, who was second in state last season.

Alejandrez had a major decision and pin to reach the finals and lost to Austin Dodson of Orting, who was fifth at state last season, while John Lindquist had two straight pins to reach the finals, before falling to Orting’s Dillon Stiles, who placed sixth at state last season.

“It’s Orting!” Martinez said. “They are on the same level as Lake Stevens, but our kids wrestled well.”

Team scores: Orting 248.5, Mt Baker 205, Blaine 180, Quincy 168.5, Elma 121, Vashon 111, Forks 104, Everett 103.5, La Center 91.5, Montesano 78, Kelso 73, Ridgefield 52, Lake Stevens (JV) 47, Auburn 23.
