Roberta Opal Middleton

Roberta Opal Middleton, 83, of George, passed away Dec. 30, 2009 at her home. She was born to Roberta Adeline (Alumbough) and Charles Orian Leivan in Golden City, Mo. in Barton County on July 24, 1926. Opal grew up in Missouri with her four brothers and three sisters. Her mother died when she was 8 years old and she took on many household responsibilities including helping take care of her siblings. She graduated in 1945 from Larmar High School. 

Opal married Harold Bert Middleton in 1946 in Fort Scott, Kan. They had three daughters and one son. Opal was a longtime George resident who worked for 28 years at Lamb Weston as a trimmer and autocaser. Besides working at Lamb Weston, Opal was a hard worker who, over the years, did housekeeping, sewing, ironing and picking apples/corn/cherries to earn a living sometimes.

She also was a 4-H leader for 15 years and enjoyed helping neighborhood children learn to make cookies, biscuits and jam.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Middleton of George; her children Sharon (Dale) Howe of Warden, Roberta (Marvin Schalhorn) Goyne of George, and Suzanne (Daniel) Walker of Ellensburg; her sister, Nora May Murphy of Missouri; her grandchildren Scott (Maria) Howe, Michael Goyne, Denny (Felisha) Goyne, Jason (Kamie) Howe, Sonya (Eric) Vraves, Cassie Walker, Chad Walker, Cade Walker, Cayson Walker, Seth Walker and Dallon Walker; seven great-grandsons; six great-granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. 

Opal was preceded in death by an infant son, Anthony Scott Middleton; her parents; her brothers, Leonard, Charles Roland, John and Ralph Arthur Leivan; her sisters, Lilliebelle (Leivan) (Ewing) Laffranchi and Lois Irene Leivan, and son-in-law, Jim Bob Goyne. 

Viewing will be from noon until 4 p.m. at Scharbach’s Columbia Funeral Chapel in Quincy on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at the Quincy Community Church, 124 D St. SW, Quincy. Concluding services and interment will follow in the Quincy Valley Cemetery.
