Rookies carry Jacks in duals
Isais Jiminez puts Wapato's Juan Cortez in a cradle en route to a 16-1 technical decision last Friday.
The rookies stood out last week for the Jacks - both young and old.
Freshman Cade Wallace pinned a Greyhound, while senior first-year grappler Diego Garcia capped a big night for the Jacks with a crowd pleasing pin against Wapato. In both cases, Quincy won the dual and defended their home turf. The Jacks stand at 3-1 in league.
It is safe to say a win is a win, but Thursday night the Jacks relied on four straight forfeits to beat Grandview 48-27. Coach Greg Martinez was less than impressed, but 24 hours later his squad came to play and won eight matches and cashed in on three forfeits for the 60-18 win.

“Mucho happier,” Martinez said. “We are focusing n the basics. That is what's happening - the basics."
While the rookies were instrumental in the league duels, the veterans came alive on Saturday in Cashmere. Gabe Martinez, Christian Alejandrez, Blas Magana and Antonio Melendez each picked up individual titles to pace the Jacks to a second-place finish, just five and a half points behind Chelan. Quincy also had big days by John Lindquist, Uriel Heras and Zach Villalpando, each placing second, and Gerry Benitez, who was third.
“We were down by four points going into the finals,” Martinez said. “Then we had four wins and led by 10 points, but all three of Chelan’s heavyweights won (by pin) and it put them on top.
“It was a pretty good tournament, but it was missing Mt. Baker and Royal City.”

Quincy 60, Wapato 18
The real fan favorite was revealed during the final match of the night, when Garcia, a senior, hit the mat.
The heavyweight was seeking his first win of the season and found it against Wapato's Osvaldo Ocampo. In the first round, Ocampo put Garcia to his back and built a 7-1 lead.
In the second round, after taking an 8-1 lead, Osvaldo tried to throw Garcia. But this time he was prepared.
"The second he had me hooked I knew," Garcia said.
So he backed out just in time and Osvaldo fell to his back and Garcia pounced for the takedown and quick pin. The crowd, literally, went wild, celebrating their friend's first victory.
"I'm like the hippy. Peace and love," he said.
The win put an exclamation point on the Jacks' dominattion over the Wolves.
"That was probably the best match of the year," Martinez said.
Quincy 46, Grandview 27
Wallace, a freshman, was able to pick up his first league win with a first-period pin over Grandview's Adan Benitez. Wallace picked up a takedown, but was reversed. A few moments later he had his own reversal and turned it into a pin at the one minute, 31-second mark.
“Congratulations, Cade Wallace,” said Martinez.
Magana used his speed to take a 6-2 lead in the first period from a trio of double-leg takedowns. He added a fourth takedown in the second period and added three more in the third round, before a pin at the 4:47 mark.
“He’s fast,” Martinez. “That should be his trademark - he can double leg anyone in the league.”
