School board okays fiber hut

Should the PUD be allowed to have access to school district lands on Road Q NW to investigate the possibility of putting a fiber-optic hut on the property? This was the question brought before the Quincy School Board on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

The board decided to allow the PUD to have access to the property to survey the land and to perform any studies relating to the preparation of documents for the proposed easement.

After the studies are complete, the school board will decide whether or not to allow the PUD to build the fiber hut. If the fiber hut is approved, the easement would be permanent and part of any agreement if the school district decided to sell the land.

The proposed fiber optic hut will service 5,000 residences, mainly within the Quincy city limits.

Greg Cardwell, land specialist for the PUD, said that putting the fiber hut on school district land would be a big plus for Quincy.

“We are trying to get public property,” said Cardwell. “The fiber hut would raise the ability of the community to move forward. Quincy is high priority to get into.”

The school board considered what the impact would be for the farmer renting the land if the PUD was allowed to have access to the land. It was also stated that putting a fiber hut on the property would not impact the ability of the school district to use the ground for other purposes.

“I see a lot of positives,” said Quincy school board president Lisa Mickelson.
