Senior center to get more improvements

The Quincy Senior Center is about to receive a second round of improvements and refurbishments.

The Quincy City Council voted at its Tuesday meeting to agree with MJ Neal Associates to provide architectural services at a cost of $5,900.

Architect Brad Brisbine told the council that the phase two upgrade plan would focus on upgrading the senior center’s kitchen and pantry.

The upgrades will include coordinating asbestos abatement of the kitchen and pantry, flooring, a new dishwasher, dish tables and a variety of sinks.

The first phase of upgrades was conducted last year. Those refurbishments included work on restrooms and ceilings.

The City of Quincy set aside $100,000 in its 2010 budget for senior center improvements.

“We haven’t dealt with all of the issues in the old building,” Brisbine said. “Basically, with this phase, we just want to get the kitchen operational again.

“I commend the council for allocating the funds to continue the work. I want to meet with (senior center director) Joy (Wright) and fine-tune the list of improvements the seniors would like to see in the third phase.”

• Quincy resident Diane Calloway had some questions for the city council regarding its recent decision to allow some of the city’s railroad crossings to be blocked for a period of time ranging from 20 to 45 minutes six times per week.

Quincy Port District commissioner Curt Morris said the port is exploring erecting signage at all of the crossings that will be affected.

“This is a work in progress,” councilmember Paul Worley told Calloway. “The bugs will be worked out. Curt wouldn’t allow that not to happen.”

• Police chief Richard Ackerman asked the council whether the City of Quincy should consider following Moses Lake’s lead of monetarily rewarding someone for reporting an act of graffiti.

“We’re just looking for more tools to combat this problem,” he said. “We should give it a trial run. Maybe it will work, maybe it won’t. But it’s an attempt in the right direction.”

The idea will be forwarded to the city’s safety committee for further discussion.
