Signe Williamson

Signe Williamson

Signe Martha (Helgeson) Williamson, 92, a longtime resident of the Quincy/George area, passed away at Quincy Valley Hospital on July 19, 2011.

She was the youngest of six children, born to Georgina and Hellick Helgeson, in Bend, Ore., on Dec. 14, 1918. She married Ed Williamson on April 30, 1939, and they formed a loving, dynamic, and hardworking team during their 60-plus years of marriage prior to Ed's death in 1999.

The couple farmed near Bend, then Sunnyside, Washington, before they moved to the Columbia Basin in 1952, where they developed farm ground and a feedlot. More moves followed: Wilson Creek, Woodburn, Ore., Ephrata, and finally George in 1972, always to pursue farming. Through all these moves (and while adding four children to the mix), Signe worked tirelessly beside Ed as his “right-hand man.”

She wore the additional ‘hats' of Cub Scout den mother, Blue Bird leader, grade-school room mother, 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher, church organist/pianist, and church council member, along with being an active member and leader of Town & Country Garden Club, Block 71 Ladies, and George Burkettes.

Always a gracious hostess, she fed a multitude of kids, hired hands, field men, farm salesmen, and other wayfarers, and was well known for her remarkable ability to stretch any meal to feed the unexpected guests that Ed brought home on a regular basis. No one ever left her table hungry, no grandkid ever left her presence without feeling loved and spoiled, no stray dog or cat was chased away, no orphaned calf was ever abandoned, no task was beyond her capabilities. The word “can't” was not in her vocabulary.

Signe loved to be outdoors, to garden, to play music, to golf, to fly, to travel, to be surrounded by her family. She was a treasured wife, mom, grandma, aunt, sister, cousin, and friend.

Signe was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; her parents; three sisters and two brothers. She is survived by sons Larry (Kathy) Williamson, Jerry (Diana) Williamson, Alan (Melody) Williamson; daughter Marcia (Eric) Streich; grandchildren Leonard Williamson, Chuck Williamson, Tony Williamson, DeAnne Clune, Eric Williamson, Tiffany Child, Derek Williamson, Jessica Hill, Jared Streich, Jake Streich, and Molly Streich; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express appreciation to the Quincy Convalescent Center and hospital for their kindness and compassionate care shown to Signe, as well as to The Cambridge for the wonderful care she received there, also.

A celebration of Signe's life was held Saturday, July 23, 2011, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Quincy. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, or to the charity of your choice.

Please leave a memory for the family or sign their guest book at www.scharbachs.com. Scharbach's Columbia Funeral Chapel in Quincy, handled the arrangements.
