Streamlining the QHS weight room
Three new machines add functionality to weight room
Thanks to a PEP grant the Quincy School District has seen many upgrades to their physical education departments - with the addition of a fitness room and now an expanded weight room. The two join the cardio room and resurfaced gymnasium.
But the latest has been the weight room at the high school, which has been in continuous forward motion for the past year. PE teacher David Stoddard has been putting in countless hours of research time trying to upgrade the weight room to better serve his students.
With the grant, they were able to add three more weight stations, to sit alongside the five current power lifting stations. The new machines will allow more students to use the weight room - a need which has risen over the past few years.

“It’s a multi-use machine in one spot,” Stoddard said. "It makes the functionality work for the cap of 35 kids and getting everyone through."
He said he used to have separate machines for bench, incline, decline, squat and others. The number of machines needed took up a lot of real estate and with five weightlifting classes, along with afterschool programs, a change was in order. This also allows more teaching latitude, as some lifts require a longer learning curve.
“For the number of kids we are getting, we had to go this route,” Stoddard said. “It takes a semester to learn certain lifts - like the power clean. I have students learning it three years later.”
