Swimnastics provides health benefits

From left to right, Patty Martin, Sherri Cole, Malia Meyer and Roxanne Mack share a laugh at a recent swimnastics session at the Quincy Aquatic Center.

The swimnastics program has been a staple at the Quincy Aquatic Center for many years.

The water aerobics class provides a low impact, high energy workout that can be fitted to the participant’s needs. Swimnastics works all the major muscle groups: abs, obliques, biceps, triceps, quadriceps and hamstrings.

The classes are offered Monday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m. People of any age and swim level can participate as long as they can touch in the shallow end of the pool. The classes are taught by Patty Martin, a former lifeguard and swim instructor at QAC. The program has had many success stories similar to Debra Winkler’s.

“I do them twice a day, and it’s made a huge improvement in my health,” Winkler said. “I have lost two inches in my waist since the beginning of the summer. I absolutely recommend it. There are quite a few health benefits, and the socializing part of it and being in the sun is great.”

The cost for swimnastics is $2 per visit. Attendees can also buy a punch card with 10 punches for $18 or an individual unlimited pass for $60. All prices are also the same for lap swim, which is held from 6:30-7:30 a.m. and noon to 1 p.m.

Lap swim allows for individuals to come into QAC and exercise on his/her own. Lane lines are set up and kickboards and paddle buoys are available for use.

“I love lap swimming. I have been swimming laps here for 28 years at this pool. It’s my favorite exercise. It’s not hard on your body and doesn’t have pressure on joints,” said Karen Schulz, who lap swims at the QAC on a daily basis. “I love this pool because it’s an outdoor pool. An indoor pool is nothing to compare to being outside and swimming. Everybody here is nice and friends and we are just a bunch of peas in the pool.”

Lap swim and swimnastics will continue until the pool closes at the end of August.
