Tax dollars aren't always wasted

I know we’ve all witnessed our government wasting our money on about everything imaginable.

I have a story to share with you of a program presently in effect. It’s called The Family Caregiver Support Program and it aids grandparents who are raising grandchildren with a once-a-year voucher for assistance with purchasing school clothes, school supplies, personal products and food.

It’s a federal program and is administered here locally by Aging & Adult Care of Central Washington. In my estimation, most of these grandparents are not raising a second family out of choice, but necessity.

Let me share that previously mentioned story:

My client came in to request a voucher for assistance in raising six grandchildren. This was about Dec. 5, 2008 and she reminded me that Christmas was coming in 20 days and she sure hoped the voucher would come before then.

She was assured of its possibility.

On Dec. 10 she called and reminded, “There are only 15 days until Christmas.”

She was told her voucher would be ready. It wasn’t ready.

On the 15th she called and said, “There are only 10 days until Christmas.” Same thing happened on the 16th and the 17th. On the 18th she called and said, “I guess there won’t be much for Christmas this year.”

End of story; on the 19th her voucher was located and rushed through the rest of the process and she received $1,000.

She was telephoned and asked to pick it up and she started crying.

When she arrived at the office she told a story about going to the doctor’s office with one of her grandsons; he was playing with a toy truck and would hardly leave because he has no toys of his own.

She was shown the voucher and she fell apart saying, “Now my grandchildren can have something for Christmas.”

So once in a while a program comes along that warms your heart and doesn’t waste our money and might even equal saving someone’s life. Or at least make it a little more bearable through these troubling times.
