The three Kings of Quincy
The King family, Dennis, Glenda and daughter, Samantha, wish everyone a Merry Christmas
In the holiday spirit, I spent some time thumbing through the Local Book to find anyone with a name related to the holiday season whom I could use for the person of the week. I found a Mr. Miracle in Moses Lake, but alas, I could not find any Quincy names that jingled any bells. Finally, I came upon the idea of interviewing the King family. Although there are four, and not just three, I was able to spend a few moments talking three of the Kings about their family and what the holidays mean to them.
Dennis King, the patriarch of the family, has been in Quincy for 32 years, and has spent those 32 years working for the Quincy-Columbia Basin Irrigation District. Dennis, who was raised in Toppenish, studied at Washington State University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
His wife, Glenda, grew up in Quincy. Her father and mother are Dwight and Marge Royer. Her aunt and uncle, Merle and Wilma Royer, ran the Coast to Coast store, where Glenda often worked as a teenager. Glenda graduated from Quincy High School in 1976 and was president of the FHA Club (Future Homemakers of America). She studied education at Seattle Pacific University, and currently works part-time teaching enrichment classes at George Elementary, where she has been for 12 years.

Daughter, Samantha King, is in her senior year at Central Washington University. She is majoring in education and will become a teacher. She satisfied her pre-autumn obligation teaching high school math in Ephrata. In the spring, she will be assigned to a school for her session of student teaching. Their son, Alex, who lives in the Tri-Cities works for the Department of Energy as an auditor, but recently passed his exams to become a certified public accountant. He will begin a new job with an accounting firm in January.
QVPR: So what do you do during the holidays?
Samantha: “We bake and bake and bake!”
Glenda: “We like to bring cookies and treats around to different people we know and the dentist offices.”
QVPR: “So what do all of you like best about living here in Quincy?”
Glenda: “People are kind, considerate and they are there to serve you. They know your name around here.”
Samantha: “I liked growing up in the country and the wide open spaces.”
Dennis: “I like that it’s not the big city. It’s quiet.”
QVPR: What are some things you enjoy doing as a family together and what is your favorite place to go?
Glenda: “Sam and Dennis love to go fishing. They go out camping and out to Potholes.”
Glenda: “We have all gone to Hawaii several times. There is nothing like the warm water in the ocean to take your cares away.”
QVPR: Is there anything you want to say about the holiday?
Glenda: “We wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Take time to savor the true meaning of Christmas this year.”
