Tigers outplay Jacks at Toyota Center

Jacob Durfee draws foul against Ephrata's Layton Lange.

The Jacks are making a habit of giving the underdog the upper hand on the basketball court.

A few seasons ago, a winless East Valley team came against Quincy and walked out 19-1.  Last Wednesday, Ephrata was muddling through a 0-26 streak, but walked out of Town Toyota Center with their first win in over a year, a 54-37 victory over Quincy.

“They played well, give them credit,” coach Wade Petersen said.  “That was no fluke. They earned that win.”

After both teams managed just 15 combined points in the first quarter, the Ephrata post Jacob Laird had a big second quarter, drawing fouls and getting to the free-throw line. Behind the posts play, the Tigers built a 22-9 lead at the break.

“They played a lot harder than us tonight,” Petersen said.

In the second half, Quincy found some life on offense, but were unable to contain the outside shooting of Dylan Bentham and Layton Lange. Bentham hit a trio of 3-pointers from the left corner and added a fourth from the right corner en route to his 18 points. Lange also racked up 18 points, but made the most of his trips to the foul line - making nine of 10 free-throw attempts. As a team, the Tigers were 21-of-25 from the charity stripe.

“They shot the ball well and we just couldn’t get a good stop,” Petersen said.

The Jacks were led by Jacob Durfee’s 12 points and eight rebounds and Mario Figueroa’s eight points and six rebounds. But as a team, the Jacks only shot 35 percent from the floor.

“We just missed some easy ones tonight,” Petersen said.
