The Jacks pulled the biggest upset in the CWAC this season with their 13-point victory over second-place Wapato on Saturday.

The Jacks are on the rise after securing a district berth, but still have just four wins to their name. In contrast, the Wolves have a 13-3 league record and are poised to take the second seed into the district tournament .

The two keys were their second fast start in as many games and limiting Rigo Alvarado to 17 points and the rest of the Wolves to single digits. Quincy pulled out to an 18-6 first quatter lead and never looked back.

The Jacks were led by sophomore Braulio Flores’ 20 points and 10 rebounds, as well as as Cedergreen’s 19 points and nine rebounds. Grigg added 14 points and Sorto chipped in 10 points.

A monster first quarter and huge third quarter sealed the deal in the Jacks 15-point win over the Huskies last Thursday night.

The quick feet and sure hands of Luis Sorto (nine points, six steals, three assists, three rebounds) created nightmares for Othello, but created opportunities for the Jacks in the first quarter. A trio of steals in just over a minute turned a three-point game into a 14-2 lead.

“That really helped to get that big lead,” Petersen said. “But we lost focus a little bit in the second quarter.”

The torrential pace subsided in the second quarter as Othello’s David Charles did his best impression of Sorto, forcing turnovers and scoring seven of his nine points to bring his team back within two points at 20-18.

The Jacks rallied in the final minute to enter the break with a 27-21 lead. Another big rally came in the third as Quincy outscored Othello 19-9 on the shoulders of Grigg, who scored a game-high 22 points and added 14 rebounds. Another key cog on offense was Chase Petersen, who added 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

“Really that was a must-win and it gives us a tiebreaker over them,” Petersen said.

The Jacks, for the most part, held Jeremy Cerrillo and Charles in check. They scored eight and nine points, respectively.

"We wanted to make sure to stop Cerrillo and Charles,” Petersen said. "Cerrillo didn’t get much. I thought if we held those two down we would win.”
