Veterans Memorial unveiling is Saturday

I would like to invite veterans and their families and members of the community to join me Saturday, Sept. 13 at 8:45 a.m. for the unveiling of the names at the Memorial Wall. It was decided that a good time to dedicate the tiles would be Farmer-Consumer Days, when lots of people would be coming to town for the celebration.

The project had been started about four years ago and Yahoo had graciously funded the building of the walls. The names were trickling in for the tiles, but it had kind of fallen into limbo, so Phil Anderson, a veteran, asked me if for my Eagle Scout project I would find suitable tiles for the wall and gather the names of those who bought a tile and find someone to engrave them and put them on the wall. It sounded pretty easy, so I thought why not? Actually, it was a lot harder than it sounds.

I have learned a lot about the military and different awards. I learned that PFC means “Private First Class” and ETO is European Theater of Operations, which includes Africa for some reason and lots of other things. PH means Purple Heart (you have to get wounded to get that one), and CIB is Combat Infantry Badge (you were getting shot at in serious combat) and SS is Silver Star (they are very hard to get).

I learned that setting tile takes good math and a gentle touch and Rick Westra is really good at it.

I would like to thank all the veterans here in Quincy for their support and help with the project, especially Herb Petrak for deciphering all the abbreviations and proofing the project. I would like to thank Scott Graves of Product Supply for getting us the granite for cost and donating the labor for cutting it into 4x8 tiles, and also I would like to thank Jerry Zerr of Memorial Marker for cutting the stencils and sandblasting the names into the tiles. Don Garrison of Garrison Homes and Rick Westra donated the labor and supplies to attach the tiles to the wall. Aleeta Merred from the Chamber took care of all the money and collecting the names. I should mention my mom because she drove me around and helped a lot with calling people to make sure I had everything just right.

If you would like to put your veteran on the next wall, contact Aleeta at the Chamber of Commerce and bring a photocopy of proof of service. I think the wall is a great tribute to those veterans who have served and I’m proud to have been a part of it.
