First up is Case Hinkins and his one important swing of the bat, which gave the Jackrabbits baseball team an extension of the season. The senior first baseman had shown some power this year with several doubles and a couple dozen RBI, but he had not hit a home run until the district play-in game. He choked up on a full count, looked to make contact and hit a two-run shot against East Valley to eliminate the Red Devils from the post-season and give his teammates two more games.

We will call his this the Clutch Bomb Award.

Twins Bonnie and Colleen Knodell had their own senior moment when they decided to head back to tennis several months ago. Originally the Knodells chose track, but after a week they moved their skills across campus to the tennis courts. They also overcame a poor showing in the first round of district tennis in Selah. The two put their rackets together and were able to win back-to-back-to-back loser-out matches to reach the state tournament. They were also the first girls to make state in 15 years.

We will give the twins the Good Call Award.

Carlos Magana showed grit and determination all season on and off the mats. The senior 119-pounder had an MRI, which indicated he tore ligaments in his shoulder, which needed surgery. But he was given the option of surgery now or later and chose later. He piled up a 20-14 record in his final season as a Jackrabbit, and weeks after the season ended, he had surgery.

But before the doctors could work their magic, Magana worked his own winning magic on the mats. Despite the injury, which was visibly bothering him during matches, he was able to place at regionals and be an alternate to state.

We will hand over the Play Through The Pain Award to Magana.

Ian Dearie was not a featured hooper this season, but he had a few top-shelf moves in his arsenal for the Jackrabbits basketball squad. Dearie came off the bench and as soon as he planted himself in the paint, it was almost guaranteed he would score.

It went something like this: get the ball, face back against the basket, fake one way and scoop the ball under the defender the opposite way and finger roll the ball into the hoop for two.

We will give Dearie the Golden Shot Award.
