Young and White Heron 'Get Together' once again

Legendary singer/songwriter Jesse Colin Young is making a return trip to White Heron Cellars on July 4.

The Columbia Basin and White Heron Winery are extremely fortunate to be able to have such a music legend brought in to perform, said White Heron owner Cameron Fries said. White Heron’s 250-person venue sold out when Young performed last summer, and Fries expects the same to happen this year.

“Because it’s such a small area," he said, "there’s not a bad seat in the house.”

Young has been a big name since he led the rock band The Youngbloods in their chart-topping and inspirational song Get Together. According to Young’s online biography he was born and raised in Queens, New York in 1941. After a short stay at prep school, Young started his solo career and recorded two albums before he and fellow band members formed The Youngbloods around 1966-1967. After their numerous hits, the three remaining Youngblood band members (Young, Lowell “Banana” Levinger, and Joe Bauer) started Raccoon Records and recorded/released four albums in the years 1970-1972.

In 1972 Young decided to once again try a solo career, which turned out to be a step in the right direction. Young’s hit song, Song For Juli, stayed on the Billboard Top 200 chart for almost a year and was accompanied by Light Shine, Songbird, On The Road and Love On The Wings. Along with his amazing song writing and performing abilities, Jesse was able to help establish the “No Nukes” movement during the 1970s. During a “No Nukes” concert in 1979, Young performed Get Together with Jackson Browne, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. During the 1980s Young opened for numerous fund-raisers and organizations while touring as a solo artist. In 1993 Young and his wife, Connie, started their own record label, Ridgetop Music, from their home. Jesse continued to record and release new albums in his mountain home until a fire in 1995 destroyed his house and his recording studio. Young currently lives in Hawaii with his family and has since rebuilt a recording studio and has released a few albums and singles, some inspired by the Hawaiian culture.

Throughout Jesse Colin Young’s life he has had the opportunity to perform with some of music’s greatest legends. In 1969 Young performed with Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin, he toured with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in 1974, and has had his music featured on popular soundtracks like that of the movie Forrest Gump. It’s also hard not to mention Jesse’s humanitarian work. Young has performed in fund-raisers for the “Dream Foundation” and the “Kona Pacific Waldorf School” (which Young and his wife helped build and where they teach music) and countless others.

At the White Heron venue, children under 13 get in free and coolers and lawn chairs are welcome. To ensure a ticket for the July 4 concert, call the winery ahead of time at 797-9463 to reserve a space.
