Brackets for the Central Washington Athletic Conference district wrestling tournament were revealed Monday, and three Quincy High School grapplers earned top-two seeds in their respective weight classes.

Tim Silvas, a senior, is the top seed in the 125-pound weight bracket. He had an incredible regular season, posting a 22-1 mark while taking down several state placers from a year ago. Silvas, who has never reached his full potential in the past because of injuries, should be considered a favorite to advance to his first state tournament.

Sophomore Manny Ybarra is second in the 135-pound bracket, behind only Reuben Lopez of Othello. The sophomore is eyeing a second trip to Mat Classic after finishing fourth at 130 pounds as a freshman a year ago. Ybarra had another stellar campaign this season, recording a 26-2 mark.

Senior Michael Reyes is seeded second in the 189-pound bracket, behind only Grandview's Adam Morales.

Other Quincy wrestlers who are seeded include: Tony Lee (17-13 overall, fourth at 112 pounds); Uriel Heras (7-3 junior varsity, 14th at 112 pounds); Carlos Magana (15-8, fourth 119 pounds); Blas Magana (2-8, 11th at 119); Gary Benitez (13-8 junior varisty, 12th at 125 pounds); Armando Herrera (3-1, third at 130 pounds); Gustavo Alvarez (11-9, 10th at 130 pounds); Ben Horning (12-17, eighth at 140 pounds); Jordan Medrano (3-3, seventh at 145 pounds); Keaton Webley (5-18, 11th at 152 pounds); Breck Webley (11-4, third at 160 pounds); Baldo Valdovinos (15-14, fifth at 171 pounds); Mario Alcaraz (7-4 junior varsity, 16th at 171 pounds); David Benitez (6-12, seventh at 189 pounds); Daniel Herrera (17-8, 10th at 215 pounds); Andres Solorio (9-14 junior varsity, 13th at 215); and Max Melburn (15-3, fourth at 285 pounds).

The tournament is Friday and Saturday in Wapato.

• The Quincy girls basketball team prides itself on balance on offense, and the numbers certainly back up that notion.

Heading into last weekend’s games against Prosser and Toppenish, the Lady Jacks didn’t feature a player with a double-digit scoring average, but had three averaging between 8.1 and 9 points per game — Dayanna Lopez, Taylor Kunkel and Colleen Knodell.

Against Prosser, Quincy was led by Knodell with eight points. Lopez, Taylor Kunkel and junior Kayla Horning had seven apiece. The next night against Toppenish, Lopez had 14, and junior Amanda Misasi had 13.

It appears as if the Lady Jacks won’t feature a lot of big individual scoring games this season (in fact, they don’t have a single 20-point ouput this year yet; Knodell’s 19 against Ephrata on Jan. 17 is their high).

But that’s fine with head coach Cully Donovan.

“We like to see (a balanced effort),” he said. “Anyone that’s open shoots it, and we try to get the ball to the hot hand as much as we can.”

• The Quincy boys basketball team has had some trouble scoring points lately, but when the Jacks do regain their scoring touch, senior shooting guard Daniel Guzman will almost certainly be involved.

Guzman started the season on the bench before claiming a starting spot several games into the year. He quickly developed a niche that was badly needed on the team – the outside shooter. He’s Quincy’s designated 3-point gunner, and has had several key baskets over the last couple of months.

Recently Guzman had been in a bit of a scoring slump; he scored just three points combined in the Jacks' games against Ellensburg and Selah two weeks ago. But he recovered somewhat to post an 11-point game in the Jacks’ 48-35 win over Prosser last Friday. Included in those 11 points were three 3-pointers.

Guzman is counted on to provide an outside threat on a Jacks team that can get inside scoring from Eric Martin and Jesse Gonzales and penetration from point guard Jay Cedergreen.

“If somebody penetrates and gets double-teamed, he’ll kick it back out to me, and I just hope my shot goes in,” Guzman said. “I was just feeling it tonight.”

• Speaking of the Jacks, their home game against Othello originally scheduled for Feb. 20 has been moved back to Feb. 19, a Thursday night game instead of Friday night.
