BBCC's ESL and GED classes under one roof in Quincy
Nov. 13, 2008 - Three hours a night, three nights a week, around 30 people come to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Quincy to take ESL and GED classes offered through Big Bend Community College. Offering ESL and GED at one site has been a goal of BBCC, since it makes it easier for students to transition from ESL classes into GED classes. Already, the program has had two Quincy students transition from ESL to GED, then transfer to BBCC's technical programs, with more students to follow, said instructor Kirsten Escure.
Vets visit school
Nov. 13, 2008 - Four local veterans, Herb Petrak, Jack Tobin, Vic Kreimeyer and Bill Judge, visited Mtn. View Elementary School during their annual Veteran's Day assembly on Monday, Nov. 10.
Four Quincy schools start student-led conferences
Nov. 06, 2008 - Four schools in the Quincy School District are doing something a little bit different this year during parent-teacher conferences this week. Instead of the traditional parent-teacher conference, where the parent comes in without the student and talks to the teacher, the students will show their parents their grades and learning goals, with their teacher spresent. At the elementary schools, the switch was about having students take ownership for their learning, while at the high school and High Tech High the switch was to increase parent involvement.
"Interrupting Poverty" workshop starts discussion in Quincy
Nov. 06, 2008 - “A lot of people don't think we have poverty in the United States,” said presenter Dr. Donna Beegle. “When Katrina happened, it was a shock, but many thought of it as an isolated incident. The fact is, there are little Katrinas happening now all across our nation. It is happening here. There are people without heat, lights, food, transportation and healthcare.”
City asks school board to consider library land swap
Oct. 31, 2008 - Quincy mayor Jim Hemberry asked the Quincy School Board to consider swapping land for a public library location during the board's regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
Wish comes true as Gregg sets sail
Oct. 31, 2008 - Lacy Gregg, 18, of Quincy, just set sail for a six-day Caribbean cruise to Key West, Fla., Cozumel, Mexico and Belize, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
School board learns about alternative education at HTH
Oct. 16, 2008 - The Quincy School District board met Tuesday, Oct. 14. During the meeting, members heard from two students taking classes through the Alternative Learning Experience Program. Student Kaleb Slusher said the program works well for him because it allows him to have a flexible schedule.
