A George resident was part of a 11-years-old and younger cheer squad that won a state championship.

Ella Nelson, a third-grade student from George Elementary, is a member of the Wenatchee based Central Cascade Pop Warner, Rams Emerald Cheer Squad, according to a news release from the cheer squad. On Jan. 24, the cheer team competed alongside 54 other squads at Mount Si High School to win one of the Junior State Championship titles.

The team has 18 girls from ages seven to 11, according to the news release. The team has competed in four other competitions this season and has so far come away undefeated.

The team started to travel and compete in 2016, according to the news release. This is the second state championship for the team and it has also sent a group of girls to the JAMZ National Championship in Las Vegas in 2017.

The team’s volunteer head coach is Joanna Tepley and the assistant coach is Meagan Vines. Pop Warner Cheer and Football is an all-volunteer organization.
