The George city council passed unanimously an agreement to send stray cats found in George to the Quincy Animal Shelter at their June 16 meeting.
The city already has a similar agreement in place for stray dogs found in George, according to the council. The new agreement to shelter cats in Quincy does not include feral cats, only stray domesticated cats.
The agreement is significant because the Quincy Animal Shelter is not taking in any animals by owner surrenders from other neighboring cities, according to a post on their Facebook page in May. They are also not taking stray animals from the public, but ask local residents to call 509-787-2222 if they see a stray animal.
The shelter remains closed to the public, but is available for adoptions, owner surrenders, and return to owner by appointment only.
