Wyatt VanDerMerwe, a junior returning to the QHS swim team has decided to expand to add diving to his resume.

VanDerMerwe is the first Quincy athlete to represent QHS in the diving event.

His first dive was at the Moses Lake High School swim meet on May 27.

“I was really nervous at first because I had only five diving practices before the meet, but I felt like I did pretty well for my first time diving,” VanDerMerwe said.

He explained that when he was younger he used to do gymnastics, and after watching diving during his first two years on the swim team, he thought it would be fun to try and a natural fit.

He also said that it does not change the way he practices much since he is still participating in regular swimming events at competitions.

VanDerMerwe participated in two total events at Moses Lake; diving and 500-yard freestyle.

He scored the following:

  • 1 meter diving - 133.25
  • 500 yard freestyle - 5:22.05
